The myths about female hockey

There are a lot of myths about our sport and, specifically, about female hockey. So we want to bust some of those myths and give you the facts.

You have to know how to skate before you join hockey

No skating experience is needed to join us! We believe that the best way to learn to skate is by playing hockey. That's why our program includes not just hockey skills, but basic skating skills as well. Bonus: wearing full hockey gear, there's less fear of falling!

Girls should play "boys hockey" (co-ed) first, then switch to "girls hockey" later

Choosing to join co-ed hockey or female hockey is a personal choice. But long gone are the days when you had to play "boys hockey" to get good development. All our players get access to high quality skills instructors and we have had many players play female hockey for their entire minor hockey career and go on to play university hockey.

You have to start at age 5 or else it's too late

No one is ever too old or too inexperienced to start playing! All you need is a passion for the sport. We offer programming for all ages and skill levels. Whether you're 7 or 17 years old, we have a place for you.

"Girls hockey" isn't competitive

All you have to do is watch some games to know that this one is definitely a myth! Our rep (representative) teams at U13, U15 & U18 offer a highly competitive place for the highest calibre players in the association to play. But players on our house (recreational or "C") teams are also deeply passionate about the game and determined to succeed both as an individual and as a team.

Hockey is a dangerous sport with a high risk of injury

Hockey can get a bad reputation for being dangerous; but our game is not the NHL games you see on TV. We place a strong emphasis on safety and provide a safe environment for players to learn and play the game. More often than not, injuries among our players come from activities outside of hockey.

Hockey is an unaffordable sport to play

It is true that hockey is more expensive than some other youth sports, but that doesn't mean it has to be unaffordable! There are a variety of funding opportunities available and options to get second hand equipment that we can connect you to. Learn more about some of those options here.
