Jana Mathers - Grad 2000

Jana Mathers – Grad 2000

When and for how long did you play with the Ravens/RGIH?

I started playing hockey in grade 9 and joined the Midget A team for RGIH. At the time, there were three teams: two midget divisions, A and AA, which included grades 8-12, and a pee wee/novice team for younger players. I continued with RGIH until Juvenile.

Why did you start playing?

I grew up skating in hockey skates, playing street hockey with neighborhood boys, and watching Canucks games with my family. My brother played hockey as a goalie, and I loved the game. I wanted to play but preferred not to play with the boys, so I joined when girls hockey was just starting to gain recognition.

What’s your best memory/highlight from being with the Ravens/RGIH?

I loved traveling and participating in tournaments. My most memorable moment was winning the chance to play in the provincials in the midget AA division in grade 12.

What are you up to now/what have you been up to since graduating from the Ravens/RGIH?

I still enjoy hockey and have played in various leagues over the years. Currently, I play women’s hockey in Richmond. I work in our family business, have two kids, and my daughter is now on the initiation team, where I am happy to help on the ice.

Why would you recommend girls sign up to play hockey?

It’s a great game and so much fun! I’m thrilled to see how girls hockey has grown over the years, creating more opportunities for girls in the sport.
