Requirements To Be A Coach

Hockey ID Number

To register for a coaching clinic, you need a Hockey Canada Registry ID number. If you do not have one (if you have played minor hockey in the last 15 years you may already have one) please contact the Richmond Ravens registrar at richmondravensregistrar@gmail.com and one will be provided.

Criminal Record Check

A copy of your request, with the confirmation code, must be sent to the Risk Manager: riskmanagerrichmondravens@gmail.com prior to participating with a team!

There is no charge for the Criminal Records Check.

Respect In Sport

Respect in Sport is an on-line course for all hockey volunteers who have contact with players. It will take you about three hours to complete. You will have to pay for the program and you will be reimbursed for the expense once you have finished it. When you register for the course, use the same email address that you used for your Hockey Canada Registry ID to ensure that your results are attached to your ID.

Coach Certification

Coach 1 is required for all new coaches wanting coach Initiation or Novice. The program is approximately 4 hours (3 hours in class & 1 hour on ice)

Coach 2 is required for all coaches wanting to coach Atom to Juvenile C and Atom Rep. The program is delivered in two parts. In Part A, you complete the online program which covers topics such as The Coaching Code of Ethics, Skills, Drills and Thrills, Dealing with Athletes, Dealing with Parents, and the Philosophy of Coaching. In Part B, you attend classroom and on-ice sessions. Part A is called HU-Online Coach 1/2. You should take this clinic now even if you cannot take the Coach 2 classroom/ice session until after the season starts. Then you will be ready to sign up for the Coach 2 clinic as soon as a session is scheduled and you will not have to wait. Concussion Assessment Training Tool (CATT)

This 40 minute online course is free for BC Hockey members and required before taking part in any practice or game.

Information for Girls Who Want To Coach or be On Ice Helpers

If you're under 16, you can be rostered as On Ice Helpers! Your role would be to assist during practices, help run drills, push pucks, and more. You won't be coaching, but you'll be an important part of helping the team. Remember, you'll need to wear the proper gear as outlined in the On Ice Helpers bulletin.

For those turning 16 before December 31, you can be rostered as Coaches! This means you'll be able to assist in games, practices, and even be on the bench during games.

You'll need to get a few certifications:

The appropriate coaching level (likely Coach 2 – Coach Level or Coach 1 depending on the team).
CATT certification.
Respect in Sport.

Schedules

Each team’s weekly practice schedule will be bulk imported into your calendar, but you can also check the association-wide schedule if you want to trade ice times with other coaches.
