Resources For Referees
Richmond Ravens Hockey encourages girls from within their organization 12 years and older to become referees. It’s a great way to gain a better understanding of the game while earning some pocket money.
New Officials Information:
New officials will attend a local new officials clinic at the beginning of the season. The clinic has a classroom and an on-ice component that will cover the skills and understanding needed to begin officiating.
There are three age groups for new officials:
- U7/U9: 11 years old (as of 31 December of the current year).
- Level 1: 12 to 15 years old (as of 31 December of the current year).
- Level 2: those 16 years old and older (as of 31 December of the current year).
To ensure all new Ravens officials are provided with ample opportunities to work games, space is limited. Capacity is based on total Ravens teams formed for the season and subject to change. For the 2024 - 2025 season, we anticipate that our new officials program will be able to accept a maximum of 3 new officials 12 years of age or younger, 3 new officials 13 or older, and 3 new officials 16 years or older.
New officials will begin by working U7 and U9 cross-ice games with older officials lining U11 and U13 games. As a part of our Ravens program, on-ice "shadow" referees will be assigned to work with officials for their first game(s) at each position/level.

The prerequisite for all new officials to register for the BC Hockey Officiating Clinic is to complete Hockey Canada's Introduction to Officiating, which is an online course. Hockey University takes about 3 hours to complete and can be done anytime during the year and can be completed in multiple sessions. It is recommended that you fully complete each module at a time as it tends to “forget” where you stopped partway through a module and, when you return to complete the module, puts you back at the beginning of the incomplete module, which is annoying. Start the next module just to make sure it knows that you are done with the previous module. Please note that it is important to complete the survey at the end in order to be recognized for completing Hockey University.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE INTRODUCTION TO OFFICIATING WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU CAN REGISTER FOR THE CERTIFICATION CLINIC. Learn more here.
Officials 18 years and older (as of 31 December of the current year) must have a valid Criminal Record Check (CRC) prior to registration. NOTE: CRC submissions may take multiple weeks to be verified and updated on your Hockey Canada Profile, so it is advisable to submit your application early in the summer.
Returning Referees:
All Ravens returning referees that wish to continue officiating must attend a recertification "Super Clinic" in the fall of each season. Super Clinics are usually published in August of each year and will be offered in central locations around the lower mainland in September, October, and November. It is important to register as early as possible as the clinics fill up very quickly. If you do not recertify before December 31, you will not be eligible to officiate after January 1.
Returning officials can recertify by signing up for a super clinic through BC Hockey.
Ravens Tournament Officials:
The Ravens host two (2) tournaments annually:
- Rep Classic - October 25 - 27, 2024
The Rep Classic features A and AA divisions for U13, U15, and U18. In 2023, we hosted teams from across BC, Alberta, Ontario, Yukon, Washington State, and Idaho. - Ice Classic - March 28 - 30, 2025
The Ice Classic features C divisions for all ages from U7 up to U21. In 2024, we hosted teams from across BC, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon States.
Our Ravens tournaments are assigned by our local RIC and are an opportunity to showcase all our talented and qualified officials in the lower mainland.
Referee intake opens 4 weeks prior to each tournament, with schedules published approximately 2 weeks in advance. Check back closer to the tournament dates for more information and sign-up links.
