Fostering Positive Involvement and Sportsmanship for a Better Hockey Experience

Being a hockey parent is a truly rewarding and worthwhile experience, but it often comes with many responsibilities. Parents are frequently called upon to wear multiple volunteer hats, serving as coaches, evaluators, directors, or referees. These roles require making decisions that benefit everyone involved, all while balancing the desire to do what’s best for their own child. The challenge of navigating these roles, maintaining perspective, and controlling passion as a fan can sometimes feel overwhelming. Hockey Canada recognizes this and is committed to helping parents meet these challenges, ensuring that they can continue to enjoy the game and have as much fun as their children do.

The Sportsmanship Starts in the Stands initiative was created to address negative behaviours and attitudes that have increasingly impacted the game in BC. The goal of this program is to foster a positive environment at BC Hockey events, creating a space where everyone—players, parents, officials, and fans—can enjoy the game. It also aims to standardize parent expectations across the province, ensuring consistency and promoting a respectful, supportive atmosphere in all arenas. By working together, we can ensure that hockey remains a fun, safe, and positive experience for everyone involved.
